The national park region Hohe Tauern Carinthia is composed of 13 idyllic places which are threaded like pearls along the Möll and Malta.
The national park Hohe Tauern is one of the most impressive alpine sceneries on earth. Here you find numerous regional superlatives: The highest mountain of Austria, the Großglockner with 3.798m. The Pasterze, the longest glacier of the east Alps. Waterfalls with immense heights, e.g. the Fallbach in Malta or the Jungfernsprung in Heiligenblut.

In addition, there is a very nice mineral exhibition at the “Alter Pocher”. A quiet, idyllic terrace with ruins from gold mining times entices you to linger here. On your way back be sure to stop by the gold panning area. The Heiligenblut gold miners will gladly show you the art of panning for gold and you will experience firsthand the feeling of the gold rush days. duration: 4-5 hours |  | Jungfernsprung, Heiligenblut | Spectacular experience hiking trail from a large platform (parking at Mölltal-Bundesstrasse) up to the foot of the Jungfernsprung. Here you’ll be shown how the water wheel was an indispensable tool in the daily lives of former mountain farmers. At the "Mentlhof" you will experience butter and cheese making or see how flax is made. duration: 6 hours |  | Briccius Chapel, Heiligenblut | The Briccius chapel is an area rich with history. This chapel was first documented in the year 1271 and is considered the place of death of the holy Briccius. The chapel designates the final point of the “Heilwasser Bricciusweg” (Briccius Trail of the Holy Water). duration: 4-5 hours |  | Educational Nature Trail Gamsgrube, Heiligenblut | This unique panoramic trail is accessible from the Kaiser Franz Josefshöhe via the so-called “Treasure tunnels”. The trail leads above the Pasterz glacier to the Gamsgrube with no appreciable inclines. Here you will find an ecologically sensitive sand dune landscape with vegetation comparable to that of central Asia or the Arctic. duration: 3-4 hours |  | Educational Nature Trail Gößnitzfall-Kachlmoor, Heiligenblut | The Educational Nature Trail "Gößnitzfall - Kachlmoor" opens up two of the greatest natural treasures of the Hohe Tauern National Park: The Kachlmoor a low-moor bog, habitat of many amphibians, and the Gößnitzfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Austria. duration: 2-3 hours |  | Glacier path Pasterze - Feel the ice-age, Heiligenblut | To the mighty glacier leads the fascinating glacier path - completely safe and incomparably spectacular! (Start: Glocknerhaus) duration: 5 hours |  | Geotrail Tauernfenster - The secret of the Alps, Heiligenblut | The tour is unique in the Hohe Tauern. High above the valley, right on the ridge in about 2,500 m above sea level, a great circular track was created without appreciable hight difference. This diverse hiking experience opens up to the magnificent high mountain wilderness out of which the Gradenmoos - a shallow moor into which several waterfalls plunge – and an elevated lake plateau protrude. (Start: parking place Gradental) duration: 6 hours |  | “Wirtsbauern” Mountain Pasture, Heiligenblut | This hiking excursion leads you from the hotel to the 1,745 m high Wirtsbauern alp. The hike takes roughly three hours. The valiant arranged and 14,4 Kilometer long Malta Hochalmstraße leads through rock tunnels and a few curves to the Kölbrein concrete dam on 1.902 m. This dam stretches elegantly between the flanks of the mountains. Austria's highest, doubly curved dam has huge dimensions: Height: 200m, length: 626m, max. Width: 41m.

From the so-called "Schoberboden" you have a magnificent view to the Grossglockner and the Southern Alps. Then it goes with the mountain railway (incidentally, the highest private railway in Europe) with comfortable 30 km/h you pass bizarre rock formations and by a 2,2 kilometers long tunnel in 15 minutes directly to the terminal Berghotel Reißeck on 2.250 m.
There are numerous hiking opportunities. From scenic walks, dreamy mountain paths, leisurely family walks to challenging hikes, steep climbing walls and high mountain lakes. |
